From Intern to Account Coordinator: Megan Allen on Building a Career in Social Media

Recording my first podcast episode gave me the opportunity to speak with Megan Allen about her career in social media and public relations and what agency life looks like day to day. Our conversation provided insight into how early experiences can lead to professional growth in the communications industry.

Megan shared how she began her career through internships with minor league sports teams, where she gained hands-on experience in content creation, organization and client communication. Those opportunities helped prepare her for her current role as an account coordinator at Earned Impression, where she works with clients including RoboVent.

We discussed the variety of responsibilities she manages, from running social media accounts and planning content calendars to pitching stories to media outlets and supporting public relations strategies. Megan explained that agency work is fast-paced and requires flexibility, as priorities often shift throughout the day.

She also described what a typical remote workday looks like. Mornings often begin with reviewing analytics and scheduling posts, followed by writing editorial pitches, collaborating with team members and brainstorming content ideas. Hearing how much goes into one role helped paint a clear picture of the agency environment.

A major focus of the episode was advice for students and early professionals interested in social media and public relations. Megan stressed the importance of networking and building relationships within the industry. She encouraged listeners to apply for internships, connect with professionals online and take advantage of opportunities to gain experience.

One key takeaway from the conversation was the value of being proactive. Megan emphasized that reaching out, asking questions and showing initiative can create opportunities that may not otherwise appear.

Overall, the podcast offered a realistic look at the communications field and the many paths that can lead to a career in social media and public relations. Speaking with Megan provided valuable perspective on how experience, adaptability and connections contribute to professional success. The episode also set the foundation for future podcast discussions focused on real-world career journeys and industry insights.
